If you’ve noticed your boiler pressure has suddenly dropped, don’t panic. It’s a common problem that we see on a regular basis, and in many cases it’s something that can be resolved quite easily – and crucially, without costing you a fortune.
Most modern boilers work best when the pressure sits somewhere between 1 and 1.5 bar when the system is cold, although this can vary slightly depending on the manufacturer. If the pressure drops too low, your boiler may stop working properly or display a fault code.
Often, the first time you will realise that the pressure has dropped is when you can’t get any hot water or your radiators are cold when the heating is meant to be on!
The good news is that low boiler pressure isn’t always a sign that you need a new boiler. Sometimes it’s simply the result of a minor issue that can be identified and repaired before it becomes a bigger problem.
What causes boiler pressure to drop?
There isn’t one single answer. In our experience, there are several common causes, ranging from very minor issues through to problems that require professional attention. Whether you have a Worcester Bosch, Ideal, Vaillant, Baxi or Glow-worm boiler, the underlying causes of pressure loss are often very similar.
- A leak somewhere in your heating system
One of the most common causes is a leak somewhere within the central heating system.
Sometimes the leak is obvious—a dripping radiator valve or damp patch beneath pipework. Other times it’s much harder to spot, particularly if pipework runs beneath floors or behind walls.
We were recently asked to check a boiler at a house in Pensby. The homeowner actually knew how to ‘top-up’ the boiler to rectify the low pressure, so they had repeatedly corrected it. However, each time, within a couple of weeks, the pressure would have dropped back to a low level once more.
After assessing the boiler, we realised it was in great shape, so the problem lay elsewhere in the system. After checking all-but one room in the house for signs of leaks and bleeding the radiators, the homeowner cleared a path into their box room (the smallest bedroom) which was being used as a storeroom – what else are spare rooms for?!
We noticed some signs one the pipe beneath the radiator valve that suggested not only a leak, but a leak that may have been present for some time. When we inspected it, there was a tiny water droplet on the silver ring around the valve. This, the further we ran our fingers down the pipe toward the floor, the damper they became.
The radiator had clearly been slowly leaking over a long period of time, and so each time the system was topped up by the homeowner, it was slowly leaking back out in the weeks that followed and thus reducing the pressure.
The fix? A super simple valve replacement which we did in a matter of minutes once we had drained the system.
Similarly, we were called to a beautifully restored house in Bebington late last year who had experienced similar issues with low pressure. Their leak was harder to find. Essentially, a previous contractor had connected new piping under the floors but the join was not water tight, and so small amounts of water had begun to leak out. We caught it before any major damage, but there was a slight watermark in their otherwise-pristine ceiling above the kitchen cupboards!
- Bleeding your radiators
If you’ve recently bled your radiators, you’ve released trapped air from the heating system.
While this improves heating efficiency, it also reduces the water pressure inside the system slightly. It’s perfectly normal to need to top the pressure back up afterwards using the filling loop.
- A faulty pressure relief valve
Your boiler contains a pressure relief valve (PRV) designed to protect the system if pressure becomes too high.
Over time these valves can begin to wear or fail, allowing small amounts of water to escape. This slowly reduces system pressure and usually requires replacement by a qualified engineer.
- Expansion vessel problems
Modern boilers contain an expansion vessel that helps regulate pressure as the water heats up.
If this loses its charge or develops a fault, you may notice pressure dropping regularly, even after you’ve topped it back up.
This isn’t usually something homeowners can diagnose themselves, so it’s worth arranging for a professional inspection.
We helped a landlord in Birkenhead with this exact issue only last week. He was knowledgeable on boiler pressure in the sense that he’d already bled radiators, thoroughly checked for leaks, etc. It’s only when we properly inspected the boiler for him that we discovered the vessel needed replacing.
- Recently completed plumbing work
If you’ve had radiators replaced, pipework altered or other plumbing work carried out recently, a small pressure drop afterwards isn’t unusual.
However, if you find yourself constantly repressurising the boiler, it could indicate that something isn’t quite right and should be investigated. Just like our earlier example, recent plumbing works that have not been thoroughly tested and checked can be common causes of leaks.
Can I simply top the pressure back up?
In many cases, yes.
Most boilers include a filling loop that allows you to safely increase the pressure back to the manufacturer’s recommended level.
However, this should only be an occasional fix.
If you’re topping the boiler up every few weeks—or even every few days—there is almost certainly an underlying problem that needs attention.
Repeatedly adding water without fixing the cause can sometimes lead to further issues within your heating system (not to mention isn’t energy efficient!).
When should I call a heating engineer?
You should arrange for a professional inspection if:
- The pressure keeps dropping after topping it up.
- You can see water leaking from the boiler.
- Radiators continually need bleeding.
- Your boiler displays a fault code.
- The heating or hot water stops working.
- You suspect a hidden leak.
The sooner these issues are investigated, the more likely they can be repaired before causing more expensive damage.
Frequently asked questions
Is it dangerous if my boiler pressure is low?
Usually not, but your heating and hot water may stop working correctly until the issue is resolved. If this happens in winter and you have young or elderly people in your house, then obviously that can be more serious.
Can I still use my boiler?
Some boilers will continue to operate with slightly reduced pressure, while others will lock out completely. It’s best to check your boiler’s instructions and avoid repeatedly repressurising it without identifying the cause.
How often should boiler pressure need topping up?
Very rarely. If you’re needing to add pressure regularly, there’s almost certainly a fault somewhere in the system.
Does low pressure mean I need a new boiler?
Not necessarily. In many cases the issue is caused by a leak, faulty component or recent maintenance rather than the boiler itself.
